Why Drug Monitoring?

Drug testing can be used for:

  • Drug treatment: To determine if patients are in compliance with prescription medication, and to determine illicit drugs usage that could be lethal to the patient.
  • Employment: Employers may screen you for drugs before hiring you. After you’re hired, they may test you to check for on-the-job drug use. If you have a work accident, you may be tested to see whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Oral fluid toxicology is the process of testing saliva for parent drugs (legal and illegal) and their metabolites. Benefits of Oral drug testing includes:
  • Oral Fluid testing can detect drug use within the first few hours of drug usage. In contrast, urine drug testing is often unable to detect the usage in the first 3 to 6 hours after use.
  • Oral Fluid test measures mainly the free form of drug (parent compound) which gives an estimate on the amount of drug entered the bloodstream. In contrast, urine test mainly measures “metabolites”, which do not correspond with the amount of drug entered the bloodstream.

  • Oral Fluid collection is performed under supervision and therefore it minimizes sample tampering. In contrast, the urine collection is done in private and therefore the chances are high to tamper the sample.

  • Oral Fluid test requires no “additional facilities” for sample collection process. In contrast, urine collection requires a private collection room for the patient to collect the sample.

  • Oral Fluid is considered non-biohazard by regulatory agencies, and this makes the sample handling process easy. In contrast, urine is considered a hazardous substance and therefore strict guidelines need to be followed while handling the sample.
